Please note: Take care not to damage the vegetation and take your garbage with you.

Why is Elafonisi Beach Pink?

The pink color of Elafonisi Beach is due to millions of tiny shell particles and red coral fragments. Over time, these mix with the white sand and create a stunning pink hue that sets Elafonisi beach apart from other beaches.

This phenomenon occurs because the pink shells and coral fragments contain a pigment called astaxanthin, a carotenoid responsible for their reddish coloration. When these tiny particles mix with the white sand, they create the unmistakable pink hue that covers the coastline. This is particularly striking on sunny days, when the sunlight reflects off the sand and water and intensifies the pink hue.

This peculiarity makes Elafonisi beach not only a picturesque destination, but also a natural wonder to explore and admire.
