Khao Sok – Thailand’s jungle hideaway

Khao Sok National Park is one of Thailand’s best-kept secrets. Khao Lak is the main hub for tourists visiting Khao Sok National Park. Located in the southern province of Surat Thani, it’s one of the most bio-diverse parks in the country. This untouched paradise gives you the chance to trek through dense forests, see wildlife in its natural habitat, and enjoy the serenity of Cheow Lan Lake, often called the “Guilin of Thailand”. Find out how to get there, where to stay, and what to do in this Khao Sok Guide.

Where is Khao Sok National Park?

Khao Sok National Park is in southern Thailand. Specifically between Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Samui. Established in 1980 Khao Sok National Park protects one of the oldest rainforests in the world which is over 160 million years old. The limestone cliffs were once part of a huge coral reef that formed millions of years ago. Now this beautiful place covers 739 square kilometers. And it’s part of the larger Khao Sok ecosystem which includes Cheow Lan Lake.

Before Khao Sok was a national park it was a no-go area where communist insurgents hid from the 1940s to the 1970s and the jungle was untouched by development. After the insurgency ended the Thai government recognized its ecological value and declared it a national park to protect its biodiversity. The construction of the Ratchaprapha Dam in 1982 created Cheow Lan Lake and flooded parts of the jungle but made the park more popular. Now Khao Sok is a unique tourist attraction with breathtaking scenery. The starting point to access the water is the Cheow Lan Lake Pier.
